How to use Incense

Take the charcoal disk with the curve faced downwards and use tweezers for this or place disk on a spoon with edge hanging off. Now take a naked flame to the disk and it will pop a splutter a bit, you may need to do this a few times to be sure that the spluttering spreads over the whole disk. Once the spluttering finishes the disk is now very hot. Place disk in burner or other safe surface which is flame proof and add about half a teaspoon of incense/herb and spread over the disk. This will now begin to smoulder. Move to a comfortable part of your room but stay near the burner so the smoke can be breathed in by you. Once the smoke begins to end you can add more incense/herbs. The disk will last up to half an hour until used up, after this put in cold water for a few hours before disposing down the sink once cold or composting; remember the charcoal can still be warm even after being in cold water.

To light incense sticks put a flame to the top inch and wait until the stick glows hot then blow flame out and leave stick to smolder. For incense cones light the top third of the cone with a flame, wait until it glows hot and then blow out and a large plume of smoke will emerge.

Whether using herbs, incense or incense sticks/cones, scents work in three ways. First it alters the atmosphere of the room you are in, producing the named effects. So an Abremelin Incense will help encourage the visitation of spirits, but you must say in your mind what kind of spirits you want to contact otherwise any may appear. Secondly the aroma of the incense will be breathed in by altering your mind so that you become more receptive to the magickal quality. Thirdly your whole Aura is changed so that it sends off signals to attract the qualities you want or give off these qualities. So a specific incense for attracting a lover would help in this process once you had left the room, presuming it is the same day. But your whole house would also act as a magnet to attract a lover for you. The effects of incense are usually for the day only, so new incense needs to be burned each day or an oil worn to keep the effects strong. Also use your imagination to visualise the incense effects coming to pass. This is important as the imagination is a tool which can use the incense to boost the magickal qualities appearance and speed.

When dealing with planetary incense, the specific planet you have chosen (Moon, Mars etc) has a number of qualities and vibrations usually around a specific theme. You need to focus these vibrations to your needs. So a Venus Incense could be burnt for the attraction of friends, lovers, reconciliation or meditation. You first burn the incense then imagine the need you want. So picture the face of somebody you want to fall in love with you, or simply picture your self/your heart as open and willing to receive love. Or picture nothing and sit in a state of meditation. You direct the incense to your needs.
